SaltFleet History

The Saltfleet Figure Skating Club began in 1970 as a project of the Winona Men`s Club under the direction of Mr. John Van Essen. Its purpose was to provide recreational and professional skating instruction for a community of children that had no other skating options available at that time in the area. The Club was and still remains a non-profit organization, managed by volunteers, operating with the co-operation and assistance of the Culture and Recreation Department. The fee charged for registration is used to pay our Professionals and to cover the cost of ice rental. Fundraising is an ongoing endeavour in order to raise money to cover any additional costs that occur throughout the season. Our yearly carnival, "Fantasy on Ice", is self-supporting.

The Club, although having its own constitution, is not registered with the C.F.S.A. but does operate under their guidelines with two highly qualified professionals, assisted by trained amateur coaches, our senior skaters. Much appreciated is the assistance given by the members of the registered clubs in our community. We are in our 38th year as a skating club due to the generousity of many organizations, including The Winona Men`s Club, The Stoney Creek Lions Club and Allegra Print & Imaging Hamilton, which have allowed us to continue to offer a fun, recreational skating program for children in the community.
