CONVENORS

Convenor/Carnival Information Meeting for Parents - Saturday February 20, 2010

Convenors (parent volunteers) are required to help out and supervise children in the dressing rooms while they wait for their turn on the ice at Dress Rehearsal and on both nights of the Carnival. Duties will be outlined more specifically at the Convenor/Carnival Information meeting, but include tying skates, helping with any potential costume changes, monitoring snacks so that costumes are not stained or damaged, and most importantly, keeping the skaters entertained throughout the duration of the show. Games, books, colouring pages may be brought into the change rooms for Dress Rehearsal as well as both carnival nights. Please sign up for at least one night of convening, so that everyone can take a turn watching the show. The Convenor/Carnival Information Meetings will be held 10 minutes into the regular skating lesson of each skate session of February 20, 2010. It is important that you attend so that you will not miss any vital information.

If you are interested in signing up to be a convenor, please add your name to our sign up sheet posted outside the committee room door.

    DRESS REHEARSAL - SATURDAY, MARCH 20, 2010

Each skater is required to show up dressed and ready to skate at his or her scheduled skate time. If your child skates in the first half of the line-up, he/she will need to be at the arena from 8:00 a.m to 10:45 a.m. If your child skates in the second half of the line-up, he/she will need to be at the arena from 11:15 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. If your child is in both halves of the show, he/she will need to be at the arena for the day 8 a.m.- 2 p.m.

    SNACK AND DINNER RULES

    • 1. No snacks beyond water and dry, plain crackers or cookies will be permitted in the change rooms.
    • 2. ABSOLUTELY NO TAKE-OUT i.e. McDonald’s, Wendy’s, Harvey’s, KFC, Pizza, Taco Bell, A&W, Subway, Mr.Sub, Tim Horton’s, Starbuck’s, or snack bar food will be permitted.
    • 3. If your child is staying for the day, a quick lunch break will be scheduled and skaters, dressed in their street clothes, will be able to eat their packed lunches in dressing room 5, away from all costumes.
    • 4. We recommend packing a lunch, because a break will occur when time permits, and they should be ready to eat, not waiting in the lobby for take-out to be dropped off.
    • 5. Coffee is not allowed in the dressing rooms, so convenors, please finish it before you arrive.
    • 6. Dry cookies and crackers such as Arrowroots, breadsticks, or pretzels are welcome. Popcorn and cheese-based crackers (goldfish etc.) are not permitted, as they make a mess on the floor, which skaters may walk through, resulting in injuries on the ice due to these food pieces getting stuck to the skate blades.
    • 7. It is our practice to re-use or reinvent our costumes, and we therefore ask for your cooperation in keeping them clean.
    • 8. Any food that may stain or damage a costume WILL BE CONFISCATED!!!!

Time permitting, we will run through each half of the show twice. Skaters will not be allowed to leave their change room until they are picked up by a parent/guardian at the end of their half. This may take some time as the security person at the door musts see the person picking up the skaters before they are allowed to leave. We appreciate your patience as this is enforced for the safety of all the skaters. Please have your skater come to the arena dressed and ready to skate for the day.

    CARNIVAL NIGHTS

    • If your child is NOT on the Carnival Night Practice Schedule, they and the room convenors will need to arrive at the arena promptly at 6:00 p.m. Skaters arriving at this time will need to arrive in their costumes. Volunteer security will be in place to escort your child to his or her allotted dressing room, and the room convenors will help them put on their skates and any other costume accessories closer to their actual skate time. Parents who are not convening that evening will not be permitted in the dressings rooms.
    • For skaters and volunteers arriving earlier in the afternoon, there will be a brief dinner break from 6 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. These skaters MUST FOLLOW the SNACK AND DINNER RULES mentioned previously.
    • For both dress rehearsal and carnival nights, you may send a quiet board game, a deck of cards, dinky cars, colouring pages, or books with your child. It is also a good idea to send a blanket for the kids to throw on the floor so they can sit and play together. Be sure to label items to prevent them from getting lost.
    • Carnival nights, send hard skate guards (not the cloth kind) along with a winter coat so that your skater can watch the performance from “back stage”, under the supervision of a room convenor.
    • Remember to pack a change of clothes for Saturday night, as all costumes will be collected after the performance.
    • If your child is in the first half of the show only, you may pick him/her up after the first half finale (intermission) from the volunteer security at the curtain by the ice entrance. If you are planning to bring your child to watch the rest of the performance, you will need to purchase a ticket to do so, since seating at the arena is limited. Skaters are also welcome to remain with the room convenors for the second half of the show.
    • Skaters who are in the second half of the performance will not be released to you until after the second half finale. We appreciate your patience, as security will need to locate your child, and release him/her to you once they are ready to go and have gathered up their belongings. This process takes time, as there are many skaters to be properly matched to their parents/guardians, and only a small amount of space to do this in. We take these precautions, however, for the safety of all children involved. Your patience is appreciated.

    TICKETS

Carnival tickets are now on sale in the committee room and will be available every Saturday until Dress Rehearsal. Tickets are also available at the door both nights of Carnival. We have rented additional seating for Carnival as the changes made to the arena over the summer has cut down on the seating available. Due to the additional cost for the seating we have had to increase ticket prices for the show this year. Tickets are $10.00 for adults (includes program) and $7.00 for children 12 & under. We have purchased as much seating as we could fit into the available space but we cannot guarantee seating, it is available on a first come basis.

    COSTUMES

Please have your child(ren) try on their costumes with their skates when they are sent home. We need to know about any issues regarding sizes before dress rehearsal. We can not fit costume issues on dress rehearsal day.

    FUND RAISING AT CARNIVAL

Flowers will be available to purchase throughout the evening for your skating star. Programs will be free with the purchase of a ticket. We will also be running a 50/50 draw throughout the evening . Peach Festival Draw tickets will be available at the ticket desk. Please remember that we are a non-profit organization and any fund-raising we do at Carnival is done to offset the expenses of Carnival and the associated ice rental. That being said, good luck with the draws!

DVD’s - You can pre-order your personal copy of the 2010 Carnival for the low cost of $30.

    REGISTRATION FOR THE 2010/2011 SEASON

Your child will be receiving a registration package for the 2009/2010 season on Dress Rehearsal Day. A discount will be available to those who register on or before July 1, 2010. Please note that registration fees for 2010-2011 have been frozen at the current year’s rates. We are promoting the use of our new payment plan option so that registration is more financially manageable. We will still have our recoverable fund-raiser, which will also assist in the payment of ice rates but this money can be fully recovered and you can win prizes. If you know of a company willing to donate a draw prize for the fund-raiser, please let us know. If you have any questions we would be more than happy to answer them and would appreciate any feedback. We will also be continuing our Enhanced Program, for those skaters who have achieved Level 6, 7, or higher. They can work independently, and take their figure skating skills to a slightly more competitive level. Space for this program is limited, however, and will be first-come-first served. If you have any questions about our program or registration, please ask a member of the Board of Directors. You may drop off your 2010/2011 registration form Carnival night at the ticket desk and ensure yourself a spot in next year’s program (a receipt will be mailed to you at a later date).

Please be aware that a number of our committee members will be leaving at the end of the season, so we are looking for parents to serve as board members to help with running the club. If we are not able to replenish our board members we may not be able to run a skating program for the 2010/2011 season. Please come and see a committee member to find out more details.

If you have any questions regarding Carnival, please speak with a committee member
